The one thing worth checking before you buy a fan
Take a photo of the ceiling box before you order anything. Two things decide most of what follows.
The first is whether the box is rated for a fan. A fan-rated box is marked and is fastened to a joist or to a brace spanning between joists. A standard light box is held by nails or a thin bracket and is not built to carry something that moves. Hanging a fan on a light box is the most common reason a fan eventually comes down, and it is why a fan that “was fine for years” is not evidence that it was installed correctly.
The second is whether the room has a separate switch for the light. Plenty of rooms have one switch running to the box. If you want the light and the fan controlled independently, that either means a fan with a remote or additional wiring, and it is much cheaper to know before you buy than afterwards.
Getting the height right
The usual target is blade height eight to nine feet off the floor. On a standard eight-foot ceiling that means a flush or hugger mount. Around nine feet takes roughly a six-inch downrod, ten feet about twelve inches, and a twelve-foot ceiling around twenty-four.
Hugger mounts on higher ceilings are the most common mistake we are called to correct. The fan is safe and it looks fine, but the air never reaches anyone, so the room stays warm and the fan gets blamed.
Sizing the fan to the room
Up to 75 square feet suits a 29 to 36 inch blade span. From 76 to 144 square feet, 36 to 44 inches. From 145 to 225, 44 to 54 inches. Larger rooms want 50 inches and up, and a long living room often does better with two smaller fans than one oversized one.
Wobble, hum, and fans that have stopped
Wobble is usually blades that are not weighted evenly, a bent blade holder, a loose canopy, or a box that was never level. It is rarely dangerous and almost always fixable in a short visit. A hum is often a dimmer being used on a fan motor, which is the wrong control for the job. Either way it is worth a call before you go and buy a replacement you may not need.
Covered patios and porches
A covered patio needs a damp-rated fan at minimum, and anywhere blowing rain reaches needs wet-rated. Indoor fans put outside in this climate corrode at the blade holders and go out of balance within a season or two. It is one of the few places where buying the cheaper fan reliably costs more.

A fan hung on a light box is the single most common reason a fan eventually drops. If yours is not rated, the box gets changed — that is part of the quote, not an extra.

Can you install a fan on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

My fan wobbles. Is that dangerous?
Usually not, but it is almost always fixable. Wobble normally comes from blades that are not weighted evenly, a bent blade holder, a loose canopy, or a box that was never level. It is a common call after a fan has been up a few years, and it is a short visit rather than a replacement.
What is a builder pre-wire and does it change anything?
In new construction the builder often leaves a capped box in the ceiling. Whether it is fan-rated varies, and whether there is a separate switch leg for the light varies too — which decides whether you need a fan with a remote. It is worth a photo before you buy the fan.
Can you install a fan on a covered patio?
Yes, with the right fan. Covered patios need a damp-rated fan at minimum, and anywhere blowing rain reaches needs wet-rated. An indoor fan outdoors in this climate will rust and go out of balance within a couple of seasons.
